The 9th Ward Opera Company Presents: Cox and Box and Trial by Jury

The 9th Ward Opera Company Presents: Cox and Box and Trial by Jury at the UNO Recital Hall on Saturday, August 4th, 2012 at 8:00 PM.

The operas we will be performing are Cox and Box and Trial by Jury. The libretto to Cox and Box was written by F. C. Burnand and the music is by Arthur Sullivan. This opera tells the story of two men who are living in the same apartment but do not know it! One man works during the day and one at night, so the landlord decided to take double the rent for the same space. The two men find out about the scam during the course of this opera and the results are very entertaining. Trial by Jury is a more well-known opera by Gilbert and Sullivan. This opera is set in a court of law where a jilted Angelina is suing her playboy fiancée Edwin for damages due to breaking off their engagement. The cast is filled with comic characters that are sure to keep the audience engaged and laughing.

UNO Music Performance Mentioned on NOLA.com

One of the performers featured during last season’s Musical Excursions, put on by UNO’s Arts Administration department, was mentioned on NOLA.com this week!

“In March, the University of New Orleans hosted Brazilian guitarist Odair Assad. His all-Latin solo recital featured a number of works that were written for him, including Leo Brouwer’s spiky, modernist ‘Sonata del Caminante.’ The UNO recital hall was a perfect spot to hear all the nuances of Assad’s playing, from the pinging harmonics and warm overtones, to the crisply articulated melodic flights that he winds around pulsing counterpoint bass lines.”

UNO Professor to be Featured in the Olympics

A UNO English professor, Niyi Osundare, has made it into the Olympics… for his poetry. The Nigerian native will represent his country with the poem “Raindrum.” The poem will be read (not by Osundare) as part of a BBC poetry series called “The Written World” that will celebrate all the countries competing in the 2012 Olympic games. Congratulations!

See the schedule for the program here.
