Director of Graduate Studies, Dept of Graphic Design, Virginia Commonwealth University

The Department invites collaboration-minded applicants with qualifications, experience, and demonstrated strength in the areas of design theory, criticism and research informed by a studio practice with strong understanding of contemporary design engagement and a record of scholarly publishing. Applicants should be able to show a strong record of teaching at the graduate and undergraduate level, with demonstrated experience in administrative leadership.

As the Director of Graduate Studies, the faculty member will be a visionary leader for the graduate program and will foster and disseminate compelling ideas concerning the nature and future of design education and practice. In addition, the Director must be a passionate practitioner who models curiosity and rigorous optimistic engagement to students and fellow faculty. The Director will lead in the areas of design theory, criticism and research informed by a studio practice with a strong understanding of contemporary design engagement.

This is a full-time, 9-month tenure-eligible position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor in the Department of Graphic Design that will serve as the department’s Director of Graduate Studies.

The Director of Graduate Studies will contribute to interdepartmental initiatives within and outside of the School of Arts and will demonstrate a sincere willingness and ability to work collaboratively with others. The faculty member must have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
